Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural way to nourish your baby, but let’s be real—sometimes it hurts. If you’re dealing with sore, cracked nipples or rock-hard, engorged breasts, you are not alone. The good news? You don’t have to suffer through it! Let’s talk about why these issues happen and, more importantly, how you can get relief fast.
Nipple Pain: It’s Common, but Not Normal
If breastfeeding is making you wince in pain, something isn’t right. Many moms are told that sore nipples are just part of the process, but that’s simply not true. Painful, cracked, or bleeding nipples usually mean there’s an issue with your baby’s latch or something else that needs adjusting.
Quick Fixes for Nipple Pain:
Check the Latch: Your baby should take in more than just the nipple—aim for a good portion of the areola too. If latching feels pinchy or painful, gently break the seal with your finger and try again. You can also try moving the baby around a little to get them in a better alignment.
Pump Flange Size Matters: If you’re pumping, make sure you’re using the right flange size. A too-small or too-large flange can cause unnecessary nipple pain and even damage.
Healing Measures: To soothe sore nipples, try:
Breast milk—dab a little on your nipples after feeding; it has natural healing properties.
Lanolin or nipple balms—these create a barrier and help repair cracks.
Hydrogel pads—cool and soothing relief between feedings. There are several brands that make these. You can wash them and keep using them.

Engorgement: When Your Breasts Feel Like Overfilled Water Balloons
Engorgement is common, especially in the early days of breastfeeding or if you suddenly miss a feeding session. While some fullness is expected, extreme swelling and discomfort mean that milk isn’t being removed efficiently—and that can lead to clogged ducts or even mastitis (ouch).
Quick Fixes for Engorgement:
Frequent Feeding or Pumping: Offer the breast often, making sure your baby is actively drinking. If they’re not hungry, a short pumping session can relieve pressure.

Reverse Pressure Softening: If your baby is struggling to latch due to swelling, use gentle finger pressure around the nipple to push fluid back into the breast and make latching easier.
Cold Therapy Between Feedings: Apply a cold compress (our favorite is a frozen bag of rice, or ‘rice sock’) or chilled cabbage leaves for 10-15 minutes to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
