Breastfeeding in public. Just reading those words might make your heart race a little. If you're like I was, the thought of nursing your baby outside the comfort of your own home might feel overwhelming. What if someone stares? What if something’s showing? What if I just can’t do it gracefully?
Mama, I hear you. I’ve been there.
I remember the first time I even thought about breastfeeding outside the house—I had so many worries swirling in my head. But I also knew I wanted the freedom to go out and still meet my baby’s needs. So I started looking for ways to ease my anxiety and build a little confidence.
That’s when I got one of the best pieces of advice from a fellow mom: “Practice nursing in front of a full-length mirror.”
At first, I laughed a little. A mirror? Really?
But I tried it. And wow—what a difference it made.
I stood in front of my bedroom mirror and practiced getting baby latched, adjusting my shirt, and positioning my nursing cover (when I used one). I got to see what others might actually see—and spoiler alert—it was way less than I thought. Most of the time, I looked like I was just cuddling my baby.
Then I asked my husband to give me his honest opinion. “Does it look okay? Is anything showing?” He gave me a thumbs up and said I looked just fine—natural, calm, and confident.
And with that, I ventured out. First to a quiet corner at a coffee shop. Then to a friend’s house. And eventually, to the park, the library, and even on an airplane. Each time got easier.
So if you’re feeling nervous about nursing in public, try this tip. It’s simple, it’s free, and it just might give you the boost of confidence you need.
