Not Sure When to Get Breastfeeding Help? Here's What I Wish More Moms Knew

Hey Mama,

Let me just say this—if you’re sitting there wondering whether you should ask for breastfeeding help, the answer is probably yes. You’re not alone. One of the biggest things I see (and hear over and over from other moms) is that we wait too long to ask for support. Whether it’s because we think it should come “naturally,” or we’re just not sure who to call, too many of us end up in pain or feeling overwhelmed—when we really don’t have to.

So let me share a few things I’ve learned, both as a mom and from talking with so many others. I hope this helps you feel a little more prepared, a little more supported, and a lot less stressed.

💡 When Should You Get Breastfeeding Help?

As soon as something feels off. Seriously—even if your baby is only a few hours old and something doesn’t feel right (pain, latching issues, milk concerns, anything!) it’s okay to reach out. In fact, it’s a smart move. Waiting too long can make little problems turn into big ones.

📞 Line Up Your Support Before Baby Arrives

Just like you’re choosing a pediatrician and packing your hospital bag, it’s worth having a few key contacts ready to go:

  • Contact Us! We will help get you to the right place whether it's an appointment with us, or someone near you.

  • Find a local IBCLC near you (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). These are the pros. IBCLCs are trained to help with everything from painful latching to milk supply issues to pumping questions. Not in the Dallas area? You can search for one here: Find an IBCLC near you

  • Check out La Leche League (LLL). These amazing volunteers offer free, non-judgmental breastfeeding support. You can attend a meeting while you’re still pregnant, or just keep a local leader’s number handy in case you need to talk things through. Find them here: La Leche League of Greater Dallashttps://www.texaslll.org/

  • Don’t forget about WIC, if you qualify. Many WIC offices have peer counselors and even IBCLCs who offer in-person support. It’s another great, low-cost option.

 What Does Help Look Like?

👉 Help can be as simple as a phone call, a message, or an in-person visit. And here’s something a lot of moms don’t realize:

👉 Most IBCLCs now accept insurance, and many plans cover visits at no cost to you. That’s huge! Setting up an appointment is often as easy as filling out a quick form online. No long waitlists. No referrals needed. If you’re not sure what your insurance covers, many lactation consultants (like us at Natural Beginnings!) will check your benefits for you.

❤️ One Last Thing…

Breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt. That’s the golden rule. If you’re wincing, dreading feedings, or just feeling unsure—it’s time to ask for help. Even small adjustments can make a huge difference.

At Natural Beginnings, we offer in-home, office, and virtual lactation consults. Whether you’re in pain, having trouble with latching, pumping, milk supply—or just want a little reassurance—we’re here for you.

💬 Reach out anytime. You don’t have to do this alone. Call or text our office: 972-302-9313
