BREASTFEEDING - ON THE INCREASE?

In 2002 the U. S. Breastfeeding Initiation Rate was 70.1%
[Up from the 1997 rates of 62.4% and 1957 rates of 20%]

2003 statistics showed a drop down to 66% for initation rates
(declining to 30.7% at 6 months).

The US rate of exclusive breastfeeding has remained at 46%
for several years. Only 10% of US babies are still being exclusively
breastfed at 6 months

Most other countries are doing much more breastfeeding than the
U.S. From the La Leche League Center for Breastfeeding Information,
with 86 countries reporting, the U.S. is among only 7 countries with
breastfeeding initiation rates lower than 85%
. 70 of the 86 countries
have breastfeeding initiation rates of over 90%!

In most populations in North Texas, about half of those quit nursing
by 3 months. That leaves 10-15% nursing past three months and a
very small percentage continuing to 1 year.

In Texas, we are seeing 22% of our WIC-supported mothers continuing
to nurse up to 6 months … and that is with a tremendous amount of assistance from the TDH (Texas Department of Health).
