Dallas Area Breastfeeding Alliance (DABA)

12 - 1 pm. The goal is the promotion of breastfeeding and education
by local professionals.

The Dallas Area Breastfeeding Alliance is an inclusive group of
breastfeeding supporters. We strive to promote breastfeeding
as the birthright of every child.

Our Mission
The mission of the Dallas Area Breastfeeding Alliance is to protect,
promote, and support breastfeeding in Dallas, Texas and the United
States. The DABA exists to ensure the rightful place of breastfeeding
in society. The DABA works to achieve the following goals:

GOAL I
: Increase access to comprehensive, current, and
culturally appropriate lactation care and services for all women,
children, and families.
GOAL II: Ensure that breastfeeding is recognized as the normal and
preferred method of feeding and nurturing infants & young children.
GOAL III: Ensure that all state and local laws relating to child welfare
and family law recognize and support the importance and practice of breastfeeding.
GOAL IV: Increase protection, promotion, and support for
breastfeeding mothers in the work force.

Objectives

The purpose of LLLI's Peer Counselor program is to develop support
systems within targeted communities that will provide ongoing access
to breastfeeding information and support by training those interested
in learning more about breastfeeding promotion, management, support
and techniques to help mothers breastfeed. These courses offer ideal instruction for those who wish to support, protect and promote
breastfeeding such as nurses, midwives, dietitians, childbirth educators,
doulas, social workers, teachers, corporate human services personnel,
health-care service office personnel, mothers, grandparents and
breastfeeding peer counselors.

The ongoing series of Lactation Specialist Workshops are designed
for nurses, physicians and lactation specialists who work in a variety
of settings including hospitals, clinics and physicians' offices.

The workshops provide a post-graduate course for lactation specialists
on current breastfeeding information, and the skills and tools needed to assist breastfeeding mothers in prenatal and postnatal situations.
Note: For the past 46 years, La Leche League International has been assisting mothers to breastfeed their babies. La Leche League is
recognized as the world's foremost authority on breastfeeding: educating lactation consultants, physicians, peer counselors, LLL Leaders, dietitians, nurses, and parents.

LLLI provides this series of lactation workshops for the individual who
desires more specific expertise in the field of lactation. With increasing
rates of breastfeeding initiation, it is essential that lactation specialists

"When Ethics and Evidence Collide: Solving Breastfeeding

Goal:
To integrate ethical standards and principles into lactation practice. Objectives:
- Describe obstacles to and facilitators of the classic ethical principles associated with health care.
- Recognize how the sale and marketing of commercial feeding products
poses a conflict of interest and an ethical dilemma for the health care provider.
- Debate whether informed consent should be obtained for common
perinatal practices that have a negative impact on breastfeeding
(e.g., supplementation, circumcision, maternal epidural anesthesia).
- Using real-life scenarios, identify possible obstacles to ethical
decisions and choose ethical courses of action.
- Recognize and avoid common violations of intellectual property rights.

Marie Biancuzzo, RN MS IBCLC, is the author of Breastfeeding the
Newborn: Clinical Strategies for Nurses as well as more than 100 articles which have been published in some of the leading journals. She has practiced in perinatal healthcare for over two decades, mostly in
hospitals. Editor of the quarterly newsletter, Breastfeeding Outlook,
and a founding member of the United States Breastfeeding Committee,
Marie is currently President of Baby-Friendly USA. She teaches Marie Biancuzzo's Lactation Exam Review in more than a dozen cities each

The Lamaze Breastfeeding Support Specialist workshop is designed for Childbirth Educators, Hospital-or community-based health professionals, Individuals interested in pursuing accreditation as a Lactation Consultants, Women who want to support other women both prenatally and during the early postpartum period

On the second day of this workshop, Lamaze offers the opportunity to work hands-on with breastfeeding dyads. A certificate of completion does not imply certification as a lactation consultant. Continuing education credits from this workshop can be used to satisfy some, but not all, requirements for certification as a lactation consultant.
